Nelligen is very fortunate in having two boat ramps on the Clyde River. The main one is on the western bank close to the cafe and in front of the Old Steampacket Hotel. This ramp is large enough to launch two boats simultaneously. A floating jetty is adjacent for dropping off or picking up passengers. For kayakers, there is even a slide up “V” ramp for easy launching or retrieval.
Plenty of parking is close by however it does get congested during holiday periods. A public toilet is less than 100 metres away towards the Nelligen Bridge.
There is another ramp on the eastern side of the Clyde River though the ramp does not extend as far into the river and no jetty or pontoon is there. Parking is limited. Access is via Thule Road or Bridgeview Road turnoffs from the Kings Highway. Just across the road from this ramp is the Old Ferry Keepers Cottage.
It should be noted that there is a 8 knot speed limit restriction from the Nelligen Bridge and south for approximately one kilometre. Roads and Maritime regularly patrol this area for inconsiderate waterways users. Not only does speeding in this area pose a safety threat, the erosion of the river banks and subsequent environmental ecology is greatly affected by excessive boat wash.
This area is also part of the Batemans Marine Park however there are no restrictions for the recreational fisher apart from the usual rules.
The western Nelligen boat ramp is easy to find. Just turn off the Kings Highway at the Nelligen Bridge. 8 kms from Batemans Bay. A childs playground and large grassed area is also available. Perfect for a picnic.
During school holiday periods, it is also possible to hire canoes or kayaks from Nelligen Kayak Hire. They can be contacted on 0436 016 856. Best to phone ahead so they can make arrangements for your river adventure.
